Standing seam metal roof installed by California Building Professionals

Trusted Roofing Experts in Tujunga

We don't drive into Tujunga to work. We're already here. California Building Professionals is headquartered at 7006 Foothill Blvd. in Tujunga, 91042 (Lic # 1150891), which makes this our home town, not a service area on a map. Tujunga sits around 1,500 feet against the edge of the Angeles National Forest, so a roof here has to survive three things at once: ember and wildfire exposure off the canyons, dry Santa Ana wind that funnels down out of Big Tujunga Canyon, and high-elevation sun that bakes shingles harder than it does on the valley floor.

We work on every kind of roof this neighborhood has — the 1920s and '30s stone-and-rock cottages that give Tujunga its character, the post-war ranch homes on the flats around Commerce and Foothill, the hillside houses climbing toward Mt. Gleason and Seven Hills, and the horse-property parcels out toward Shadow Hills, Sunland, and Lake View Terrace.

Built for Tujunga's Fire Zone, Wind & Sun

Anyone who lived through the 2009 Station Fire knows what this neighborhood is up against. Much of Sunland-Tujunga is mapped in or against a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and in a wind-driven fire, roofs ignite from embers landing in a gap, not from a wall of flame. So we build for embers: Class A rated assemblies, ember-resistant vents, tight eave and rake closure, metal drip edge, and non-combustible valley metal.

Then wind — the Santa Anas accelerate coming out of Big Tujunga Canyon and hit the neighborhoods below. And then sun and debris at 1,500 feet, where the UV load and day-to-night temperature swings are harsher than on the flats. We build in the ventilation, underlayment, and drainage details that account for all of it.

Tujunga Is in the City of L.A. — Here's What That Changes

This is the single most common thing homeowners here get wrong. Neighboring La Crescenta is unincorporated county. Tujunga is inside the City of Los Angeles, so your roof permit is pulled through LADBS, and the city’s cool-roof requirement applies. On a re-roof that replaces more than half the roof, the new roofing has to meet the city’s current minimum reflectance for your roof slope — but it rarely costs more or forces a white roof, since most shingle and tile lines carry cool-roof-rated colors, including dark ones. We confirm the rating before we order and pull the permit ourselves, so nothing gets flagged at final inspection.

What Homeowners Have to Say

Tujunga Roofing FAQ

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Tujunga?

Yes. Tujunga is in the City of Los Angeles, so roof replacements are permitted through LADBS, not L.A. County. We pull the permit and handle the inspection as part of the job.

Usually, if you’re replacing more than half your roof. The required minimum reflectance depends on your roof slope, and we confirm the current value for your roof before ordering. Cool-roof-rated shingles and tile come in dark colors, so it rarely limits your look.

Much of Sunland-Tujunga is mapped in or next to a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone because of how close we sit to the Angeles National Forest. We can check your exact address against the current CAL FIRE map and recommend a Class A, ember-resistant assembly.

It depends on slope, access, and fire exposure, but standing seam metal and Class A concrete tile both do very well here — they shed embers, handle Santa Ana wind, and hold up to the UV load at this elevation. Wind- and cool-roof-rated architectural shingle is the strong value option.
